Mid-day meals are very important for all age groups at C5 and are special times for having a lovely environment for eating, socializing, reviewing activities of the morning, and practicing skills and protocols associated with dining. The Pre-K children are fascinated with how things work, so they eagerly enjoy taking turns every day during their regular family-style lunches in learning how to set the table, serve food, discuss their projects and families, and clear up afterward. They also appreciate the table cloths, fresh cut flowers gathered from the Farmers Market every week, and the ceramic dishes, glass tumblers, and metal flatware.
One learning group became very excited about setting up and serving snacks and meals. So, they studied restaurant businesses, table services, and employee attire. The result for months was children taking turns coming in early from the outdoor Courtyard, setting up the tables for lunch, and serving their friends in the rest of the classroom in restaurant server attire — dress shirts, dark pants, aprons, and small towels over their forearms!
